Reading Torque–Turn Signatures to Detect Abnormal Make-Up

Final torque is one outcome; shoulder position, slope, turns and signature shape provide a fuller view of connection quality.

Why the full signature matters

The same final torque can result from different make-up paths. Early torque build, displaced shoulder, unusual slope or excessive turns may indicate changes in thread, compound, alignment or material condition.

Define the process window first

A defensible decision requires the connection, reference signature, minimum and maximum torque, shoulder region, delta torque after shoulder, turn limits and rework procedure. Different connections should not share an unvalidated window.

Typical anomaly clues

Early high friction may raise torque prematurely; alignment or thread issues can disrupt continuity; compound and surface variation can alter slope and shoulder position. Signatures must be interpreted with inspection and process records.

Traceability supports improvement

Link the signature to machine ID, sensor calibration, operating parameters, material batch and disposition to support review, customer quality records and continuous improvement.
