Why non-marking gripping matters

Surface damage to high-alloy, corrosion-resistant, coated or premium-connection tubulars can affect sealing, fatigue life and downstream inspection. Selection should consider torque transfer, allowable contact pressure, surface condition and repeated handling.

More than removing dies

Non-marking does not mean reducing gripping force. The objective is to increase effective contact area, stabilize friction, synchronize gripping and avoid localized loading. Insert material, condition, hydraulic pressure and tubular cleanliness all influence the result.

Inputs for selection

OD and wall range, material and finish, connection, target and maximum torque, permitted surface indication, available space and cycle time establish the basis for the gripping and control concept.

Verification

Use representative tubulars and the most demanding agreed condition. Record grip pressure, applied torque, slip and surface inspection over repeated cycles, with acceptance criteria agreed before manufacture.
